The United States is a federal republic comprising 50 states, 49 of them on the North American Continent, and one state, Hawaii, in the Pacific.
The United States in the alternate history of Prey began active (and secret) cooperation with the Soviet Union in 1960 as a response to the threat of the Typhon encountered on the Vorona-1 satellite, resulting in the creation of the Kletka Program, a space station designed to contain the Typhon in orbit around the moon. However, following a failed assassination attempt on President John F. Kennedy in 1963, the United States took over the program from the Soviets, incorporating the space station as part of their Axiom Program by building crew quarters and laboratories above the Typhon containment cells. Following the disastrous Pobeg incident, in which several Typhons escaped and killed a research team in 1980, the United States eventually shuttered the project and abandoned the station.
Due to Kennedy's stronger support of the American space program, the United States exercise heavy control on space-based development and remains the dominant force in space. As of 2035, the U.S. constructed the first space elevator, the White Stork Tower, and allowing them to nearly control all of orbital activities and commerce. The United States also avoided from becoming involve in foreign wars, such as completely withdrawing from the Vietnam War, as Cold War tensions recede with the Soviet Union suffering from economic collapse. By the 1990's, American interest in the Space Race soon waned as government spending in the space program has become too costly and combined with the lack of a military necessity, shifted political focus on solving domestic problems.
