Help:Wiki Videos
Wiki Videos are shown in a featured placement at the top of select article pages on top FANDOM communities. This is an additional way to provide information to readers.
How the player works
On desktop, Wiki Videos display at the top of some article pages on top FANDOM communities. These videos are added by FANDOM staff via a backend process. When a user opens a page with a Wiki Video, the video will automatically play without sound. When the user scrolls down the page, the video minimizes into a smaller player in the lower right hand corner of the page. The video can be paused and the minimized player can be dismissed at any time.
On mobile web pages that have Portable Infoboxes, Wiki Videos display within the infobox and remain fixed at the top once the user begins to scroll. If the page has a non-Portable Infobox or no infobox at all, the video displays at the top of the page and remains fixed and minimized at the top of the page.
Types of videos
FANDOM's Video team continues to experiment with the types of Wiki Videos that we produce. So far, four key types of Wiki Videos have been featured:
- High Production Custom Videos. These are custom videos that the Video team puts extra effort into—including hosts for the videos, digital effects, voice-over, and more—for especially high-traffic pages on key communities. These videos spotlight users as authorities on their fandoms. An example of this video is "Will We Ever Visit the Andromeda Galaxy?" for Mass Effect: Andromeda.
- Templated Video with Voice-Over. These videos follow a basic format that has footage or images about the subject with voice-over. Examples include Newt Scamander and List of spells on Harry Potter Wiki. Some on-screen text may accompany the voice-over.
- Templated Video with On-Screen Text. Unlike Templated Video with Voice-Over, these videos do not include voice-over but do include on-screen text. One example is Alec Ryder on Mass Effect Wiki.
- Third Party Videos. These are videos we did not create but have identified as high-quality official videos, like trailers or official gaming videos. Examples include Champion Spotlights on League of Legends Wiki, such as Aatrox.
Wiki Videos are primarily made by FANDOM's video producers. However, FANDOM staff is working with communities so users and admins can write scripts or, if they have production experience, create the videos.
How this benefits communities
Web users are increasingly looking for information in video form. It offers a quick and digestible way to access information in an entertaining way. FANDOM has always been a source of information for fans, and will continue to be so using wiki text in addition to videos.
Additionally, the advertisements placed in front of Wiki Videos offers FANDOM the opportunity to improve the ad experience on the site. These ads are of such high value that many of the other smaller advertisements that hurt page performance can be removed from the site. FANDOM is testing new ad placements to determine what the right new format should be.
